New to streaming: What to watch on Netflix NZ, Neon and more this week

We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Apple TV+, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.

If you like big-budget sci-fi: Dune Prophecy (Neon, November 18)

Set 10,000 years before Denis Villeneuve’s awe-inspiring Dune, the mysterious all-female sect the Bene Gesserit take centre-stage in Dune Prophecy – one of the most anticipated TV show releases of 2024. Villeneuve’s film set a mighty high bar, but one early review describes Dune Prophecy as a “sci-fi showstopper that is “deliciously epic”. Sharing the same grand world building and mystic soundscapes, the show delves into the murky mythology of the Bene Gesserit. They’re combating forces who threaten to destroy humanity. The sect’s plans are measured in centuries not decades. Dune Prophecy is sure to bring the spice.

If you like Taika Waititi: Interior Chinatown (Disney+, November 19)

Crazy Rich Asians castmates Jimmy O. Yang and Ronny Chieng reunite in Interior Chinatown, a side splitting satire about Willis Wu. He’s a background character trapped in a fictional police procedural. After accidentally witnessing a kidnapping, the struggling waiter becomes the unlikely hero of the show. A humorous takedown on Hollywood’s stereotypical treatment of minorities and racism in America, Interior Chinatown’s pilot episode is helmed by executive producer Taika Waititi. Add in the iconic Tzi Ma, a The Truman Show-like setting, kick-ass kung fu scenes and the distinctly Asian-American production has all the makings of a comedy classic.

If you love erotic melodramas: Cruel Intentions (Prime Video, November 21)

The salacious 90s classic Cruel Intentions turned 25 this year, and this TV show adaptation is set to bring the original’s wonderfully juicy depiction of sex and lies to the TikTok era. After a hazing scandal at a Washington DC college, ruthless step-siblings Caroline and Lucien will do anything to preserve their power and social status. Annie, the daughter of the vice president of the United States, enters their sights and the two embark on a cat-and-mouse game of seduction. Think Saltburn crossed with Gossip Girl. Cruel Intentions might be your next guilty pleasure.

If you enjoy darkly humorous whodunits: Based On A True Story (TVNZ+, November 22)

If you’ve finished the latest season of Only Murders in the Building and are in need of an entertaining whodunnit to binge, Based On A True Story is one to watch. When married couple Ava (Kaley Cuoco) and Nathan (Chris Messina) cross paths with a serial killer, they decide to cash in on America’s obsession with true crime. The amateur sleuths start a podcast, and in season two a new string of grisly murders provide Ava and Nathan with fresh material. Don’t let this tongue-in-cheek gem pass you by. If you do, danger might come knocking…

If you like sprawling historical dramas: Blitz (Apple TV, November 22)

Few directors working in Hollywood today have the prestige of Sir Steve McQueen – the first black filmmaker to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Known for a small but subversive oeuvre, McQueen’s newest outing is the hotly-anticipated and “jaw-dropping historical drama” Blitz. As Nazi Germany attempts to bomb England into submission, a young child (Elliott Heffernan) embarks on a perilous journey through the rubble of London in search of his mother (Saoirse Ronan). With McQueen behind the camera, Hans Zimmer’s blood-curdling score and an ensemble cast of Britain’s finest, Blitz is not to be missed.
