Watch the trailer for our new docuseries, Bryn & Ku’s Singles Club.
In a brand new documentary series for The Spinoff, comedians and friends Brynley Stent and Kura Forrester hit the road in the hopes of finding love and exploring the state of dating in modern day Aotearoa. Searching for answers everywhere from a fishing trip off Rakiura to a bowls club in Thames, the pair discover more about connection and relationships than a swipe on Tinder could ever teach them.
Fleeing Tāmaki Makaurau for greener pastures, they begin their journey in Brynley’s hometown of Ōtautahi, where a meet and mingle games night, a social running club and a small town ball force them to meet people outside of their usual circles. Then heading further south to Ōtepoti, a night of partying with students reveals some wholesome truths amid the endless beer funnels.
At the bottom of the country in Rakiura, the pair mingle with the locals living and loving in one of our most isolated communities, where the Tinder options are minimal but the need for human connection remains. Thankfully there’s slightly better odds for them in Kura’s hometown of Pōneke, where they both bring down their walls, wear their hearts on their sleeves, and bravely head out on first dates themselves.
Making one final stop in Thames, Bryn and Ku meet some older members in the community who have found love later in life, or contentment in being alone. Heading back home, the friends brave one more big unknown as Brynley makes the decision to freeze some of her eggs. As they settle back into their regular lives, they reflect on the journey – and how the love they were looking for may have been there all along.
